Need a little help here

Calling all cousins! (Too bad there isn't a cousin beacon like the batman signal.)

James and I are planning on attending my host-sister's wedding near Stuttgart this coming summer and are looking for a little European travel advice. By the way we're planning on traversing through three countries - Germany, Switzerland, and France - if all works out and we're able to make a couple of connections with family friends. We're starting to check travel sites and are wondering about car rental vs. rail passes. I love public transportation, but enjoy the freedom of hopping in a car and heading out without worrying about schedules (which seems very American of me for some reason...). Yet there are pros and cons of both. Just curious if anyone has an opinion or advice to share.

oh that sounds like great fun! we are trying to get to austria in the summer, maybe if we timed it right we could meet up with you somewhere. who knows!
the car vs. rail thing is hard. last time we flew into zurich and took the train to austria where we rented a car - so we did a little train and a lot car. that gave us the flexibility of the car, but we didn't have to pay the swiss car rental prices. so, if there are specific areas where you want the freedom of the car, you could get it for part of the time.
the train is great for enjoying longer distances - talking and munching and taking pictures, but you discover so much more with the car in the small places.
are you going to try and visit bertlinde in france?
can't wait to hear more of your plans!

super cool! you will have a wonderful time. you should talk to my parents about car vs train. i think they did this same area a couple summers ago by car.

i agree with chris that train is better for distance (no stress of getting lost, you can sleep, etc...) and car is good for exploring little places you would never see on the train.

we did the car in croatia and it was nice to have the freedom to go where we pleased. we were not in a big city though so i don't know how parking works in a big city.

i'm not sure i have much to add as far as advice goes, but i had to respond to the cousin beacon, which i am assuming is in the shape of a bear?! :)

one small thing, and i don't know if it's still the case, or if it matters to you guys, but it used to be less expensive and more common to find rental cars with manual transmissions.

Hi Kristen! We talked about making it over to England to visit you, but we don't have that much time with James' work schedule. Are you going to be stateside anytime soon?
